About AhiKā Home-Based Childcare

At AhiKā Home Based Childcare, we believe that the most meaningful learning happens in places where children feel safe, known, and deeply connected. Our name AhiKā comes from the Māori concept meaning “keeping the home fires burning” - a symbol of belonging, continuity, and the importance of home and whānau.

Our philosophy reflects this belief: at the heart of every home learning grows. Within the calm rhythm of a home environment, children are supported to explore, play, wonder, and develop a strong sense of who they are.

AhiKā provides high-quality home-based early childhood education and care from Warkworth to the Far North, offering families a nurturing alternative to centre-based care. Children learn in small groups of up to four, allowing educators to build strong relationships and provide individualised attention to each child.

For Families

Choosing care for your child is one of the most important decisions a family makes. At AhiKā, we work closely with whānau to ensure children feel secure, valued, and supported in their learning journey.

Our educators provide warm, home-based environments where children can form strong and trusting relationships, explore through play and everyday experiences, learn alongside a small group of peers, and develop confidence, curiosity and independence. These small, nurturing settings allow children to experience a strong sense of belonging within the home and their wider community.

Our programme follows Te Whāriki, the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, supporting children to grow across all areas of learning including wellbeing, communication, contribution, belonging and exploration. Children’s interests and emerging ideas are valued, and educators provide meaningful opportunities for children to investigate, create, and make sense of their world.

Each child’s learning journey is shared with families through regular learning stories and documentation that celebrate their interests, discoveries and growing capabilities.

Our educators are carefully selected and supported. Homes are safety checked, educators are police vetted and first aid certified, and each educator receives ongoing professional support from a qualified Visiting Teacher who works alongside them to ensure high quality education and care.

For Educators

AhiKā supports passionate educators who wish to provide early childhood education from their own homes while being part of a professional and supportive network.

As an AhiKā educator you are not working alone. You become part of a community that values collaboration, professional growth and high-quality practice. Educators receive ongoing support and mentoring from qualified Visiting Teachers who provide guidance with curriculum implementation, learning documentation and reflective teaching practice. We support educators to meet Ministry of Education licensing requirements while also helping them develop confidence in their role as early childhood educators.

Educators are also supported through professional development opportunities, service systems and administrative support, allowing them to focus on what matters most — building meaningful relationships with children and supporting their learning.

Our educators are encouraged to create rich learning environments where children can play, explore and develop meaningful relationships within the natural rhythm of home life.

Our Commitment

At AhiKā we honour children as capable, curious and competent learners. We believe that strong relationships, respectful practice, and meaningful experiences support children to develop confidence in who they are and their place in the world.

We work in partnership with families, recognising parents and whānau as children’s first teachers and valuing the knowledge, culture, language and aspirations they bring.

Through the warmth of home, the strength of relationships, and a curriculum guided by Te Whāriki, we support children to grow, learn and thrive.

At the heart of every home, learning grows.
